We Can Share This Place
This month is very important to me, something I have been working towards for the past eight months: my Solo Exhibition.
There have been three special journeys that have shaped the new artworks I will reveal on opening day. The echoes of those experiences continue to work within me, becoming visible in the paintings themselves.
I was fortunate to take three very different trips while creating this body of work.
One of those journeys led me to Jervis Bay.
It was a gentle and soft time, sometimes cold, with autumn palpable in the air - but always filled with light, with the soothing turquoise of the sea, gentle waves, and the quiet murmur of early mornings in my makeshift outdoor studio. I found a wonderful feeling there: the sense that I could spend many months living simply and easily by the sea.
Camping under the stars in a swag and driving to remote places has been a big part of my life in Australia.
It has long been a dream to drive across the country, along remote roads, finding new places, taking time to paint while travelling - carrying very little with me, except many rolls of canvas and tubes of paint and pigment.
A few weeks ago, we set out for Queensland, thinking it would be a trial run for one of these longer trips.
It turned out to be very muddy and very wet - a trip filled with reading, waiting, and looking up only to find that it was still raining.
And yet, the artworks that have emerged from that journey are perhaps the most colourful of all.
The third journey was a road trip to Uluru, Yulara, Alice Springs, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon - just the beginning of crossing Australia, or perhaps halfway.
Not off-road, but certainly deep into the outback.
It was incredible to watch the slow and subtle changes in the land:
Leaving the Friday night traffic of Sydney behind, weaving through the dark, deep greens of the Blue Mountains, then onto lighter plains, where lush greens slowly faded into olives, then into browns.
The trees grew smaller, the bush thicker, and finally, the landscape opened into vast, empty plains - one endless flat line under a huge, boundless sky.
Then the pindan soil appeared, deep orange intensifying and sometimes shading nearly into purples.
A few hundred kilometres before Alice Springs, the green returned suddenly, almost fluorescent in its intensity, full of life.
The spinifex flowering through the red centre, soft and pastel yellow, moving gently with the breeze.
Arriving in Yulara, witnessing these colours come alive together, breathing in the deep spirituality of this land, walking its paths, feeling the layers of culture, of history, of trauma and healing—it was, and continues to be, an ongoing spiritual experience.
It has deeply impressed itself upon me.
These three very different journeys, all shared with my wonderful partner Peter, and the visit of some of our very beautiful friends - have left so many treasured traces in my heart.
My heart is full and so are the gallery walls.
My artworks carry the stories gathered along the way.
It would mean so much to me to welcome you there.
With lots of love,
Kirana xx
