When Deadlines Become the Fire of Creation
There are seasons in every artist’s journey when pushing ourselves becomes the only way through — no matter the weather outside or the mood within, no matter whether I feel like painting or would rather go for a swim. Sometimes it simply has to happen because deadlines are looming.
Sometimes the calendar fills with commitments: a submission date for an exhibition, twenty artworks promised for delivery, a commission that needs to be wrapped up, or simply the promise you made to yourself to finish that one artwork that just won’t leave you alone.
The studio becomes a world of its own — a place where time slips away and the pressure to deliver sharpens focus and tests resolve.
As artists, we often find ourselves in these phases: sprinting toward deadlines, juggling projects, and trying to balance inspiration with discipline. It’s easy to imagine that creativity only flows in relaxed moments, but the truth is that sometimes it is forged in urgency.
There are mornings when I wake before the sun, and the only sound is the gentle scratch of a brush or the soft swoosh of pencil against paper. The world outside may be quiet, but the drive inside is anything but. And then there are days when hard rock is blasting through my studio, and that feels exactly right too.
Being under pressure for a deadline can feel like walking a tightrope — the urgency quickens your pulse and sharpens your senses, but it can also distance you from your emotions. In those moments, the challenge is to reconnect, to pause, and allow yourself to feel what is stirring inside.
Sometimes expressing those feelings through the work becomes a lifeline — a way to anchor yourself amid the rush. You learn to let the tension and vulnerability flow onto the canvas, embracing both the chaos and the clarity it brings.
It’s not just about the artwork that needs completing — it’s about showing up for yourself. Every hour spent wrestling with a canvas, every moment you push through fatigue or doubt, is a testament to commitment. And every deep breath you take, every hug you give and receive, every moment of allowing feelings to arise, is a testament to life itself — to being alive.
Sometimes the deadline forces you to make choices you wouldn’t otherwise make: to trust your instincts, to leave a piece raw and honest, or to take a risk with colour or form. It’s messy, exhilarating, and sometimes overwhelming. But it’s also a reminder that every artist’s path is built on persistence.
Even when we are tired, even when doubts creep in, we keep going. There is power in pushing through — in finding a way to create even when the days are long and the deadlines feel impossible.
Each finished work is more than pigment and form. It is evidence of resilience and of what it means to do the work again and again.
So if you find yourself in a season where you’re pushing hard, know that you are not alone. The creative journey is full of these moments — demanding, sometimes daunting, but ultimately meaningful.
The act of showing up, especially when it feels hardest, is what gives the work its depth and its life.
Thank you for being part of this story, for listening, and for supporting those of us who keep returning to the blank canvas — deadline after deadline, season after season.
With love,
Kirana xx
